The Tranquil Shepherd
Nestled in the Cresthaven Ridge, overlooking the shimmering city of Lunaria, was the Respite—an invite-only enclave reserved for the brightest thinkers, creators, and dreamers of the age. A place where the pressures of urban life were absent, replaced by serene vistas and the latest in technological comforts.

It was a fully-comped, all-inclusive retreat for Lunaria’s top creative talent. Few expenses were spared in the luxurious mountainside complex, and most considered it an honor to be selected for the standard three-month retreat. The possibility of an invitation had always been an acknowledged variable, regarded as a long shot at best. But no one was more shocked than Kaelen Pax to learn he’d not only been invited, but also granted a year-long stay—one of only five residencies awarded each year, selected by committee. It seemed a fortuitous turn in the mission.

The cavernous compound was the perfect blend of function and luxury. The curved architecture drew inspiration from organic forms, while its pearlescent interiors scattered the natural light, casting a gentle, diffused glow. The ambience permeated the multitude of common areas, secluded dens, and private rooms—all designed to promote and maximize relaxation and creativity. From its famed chambers of solitude to its spacious open-air lounges and numerous meditation and relaxation nooks scattered throughout, the Respite offered guests a unique, soul-grounding experience that rarely failed to inspire and transform.

Kaelen’s personal quarters were testimony to the cause. The central feature of the main chamber was an expansive, oval window offering breathtaking views of Lunaria. The sweeping cityscape sparkled like a jewel as null-grav vehicles cruised the airways. Sunlight filtered through towering spires, bathing the structures in a golden sheen reminiscent of a sprawling coral reef basking in the ocean.

Against the south wall, a workstation equipped with holographic interfaces and an AI assistant was at the ready. The multi-dimensional canvas could bring to life any idea or concept, from a fleeting thought to the most intricate design. Shelves filled with dusty books and artifacts from the Old World lined the walls—silent testimonies to a bygone era.
The sub-chamber of Kaelen’s quarters was also spacious, with a second, private workspace for his daily musings and personal communications. Protruding from the opposite wall, a bed dressed in warm tones of amber and rust seemed to levitate above the pristine floor. Its smooth bio-fabric sheets adjusted to Kaelen’s body temperature and comfort settings.

Yet, beneath the surface luxury of his tranquil haven, a secret lay concealed. A quantum communication device hidden beneath the synthetic marble panels of the floor connected Kaelen to the Dogs of the Wolf, an enigmatic order of ancients seeking to free the new worlds from the old, to break the gates that bound them. Ambitious, to say the least. And not without cost.
Kaelen had always been a realist. Some worlds wouldn’t survive, and he felt the burden, the future consequences of his actions. But it was for the greater good. The sheep needed new shepherds.
And so it was there, high above Lunaria, Kaelen Pax plotted, planned, and dreamt of a golden age, one in which Sol was no longer the center of civilization. For Kaelen Pax, the Respite was more than a refuge; it was a vantage point, a place of perspective, where the weight of his mission succumbed to the limitless possibilities of a future yet realized.
It would be centuries before humanity reconnected, the power dynamics irrevocably altered as each surviving world realized its true sovereignty in isolation. Freed from the old, the Wolf would rise, leading humanity on an odyssey of exploration and discovery. A new pantheon, sojourning through the universe one planet at a time on a never-ending quest to unravel the mystery of creation, and stand among gods.
